Corsetry Basics
with Susan Spencer

This intensive weekend workshop will equip you with a great tool kit of skills for constructing and fitting a number of different styles and shapes of corsets and stays. Working with a mid-Victorian pattern, which gives the traditional "hourglass" shape, you'll learn about fitting corsetry, creating smooth curved seams, different styles, types, and insertions of boning and stiffening, lining, casing, eyelets, and a myriad of other details that are critical to a good fit and smooth finish . . . and the bonus is that you will end up wth a curvy Victorian corset to fit yourself! The added (secret!) bonus is that you will have learned all of the techniques required to construct almost any other corset or set of stays out there, for any time period or shape. The kit fee includes fabrics, bones, notions, lacing, and everything that you will need to put your corset together. Participants are requested to bring fabric scissors, pins, a sewing machine, hand sewing needles, a seam ripper, and any other sewing accessories that you like to use. Experience sewing on a machine is required for successful completion of this workshop.
