Empire Millinery
with Susan Spencer

What could be better to complement your Empire-style outfit than an appropriate hat? Each participant will design and build their own hat, starting with the creation of a brown paper pattern and working through construction of the form from buckram and wire, then covering and trimming the hat in a style appropriate to its time period. You'll have your choice of a shako-style bonnet or an "Emma" bonnet, both of which appear in fashion plates dating from 1804 through 1820. Work will be done both by hand and by machine.   Kit includes buckram, wire and joiners, millinery needles, pins, thimbles and brown paper; participants are required to bring approximately 1.5 m of covering fabric (more if you're wanting a really big hat!), matching thread, and scissors, and, if desired, fabric scraps and purchased trims for creating hat ornaments. A basic knowledge of machine sewing is highly recommended for this workshop.
