| Many of our flagship products are produced by Hillsburg Woolworks. These all-natural, Ontario grown and spun woolen products are a delight to see and touch. Hillsburg Woolworks is the wool division of a sheep farm in Hillsburgh, Ontario. Only their best fleece, along with choice fleeces from a few neighboring farms, are used to create their broad range of excellent and attractive products. Their natural wool is special in many ways, as it is custom-handled and custom-processed to their exacting specifications. The colours of their products, which range from natural whites through shades of greys, browns, and natural blacks, are those of the sheep that grew the wool. The natural fleece is washed in hot water containing only a gentle detergent, so that it retains much of its natural lanolin. No acids or insecticides are used in the processing of the wool, so that even those with sensitivities to chemicals find the products comfortable to wear. |
Hillsburg Woolworks products include yarn in 1-ply, 2-ply, and softspun, pencil rovings, quilting and thrumming batts, blankets, and tanned skins. In addition, their squad of talented hand-knitters make a full range of knitted goods, including treasured toys, fanciful tams and hats, delicious sweaters, excellent ice-fishing socks, and lacy summer shawls. Their specialty is the "thrumming" technique used to produce the celebrated East Coast Fisherman's Mitts and Socks, whose "thrums" of unspun wool form an extra layer of warm and incredibly soft insulation inside the mitten or sock and an interesting heart pattern on the outside. Mittens and socks made in this style have a history dating back at least as far as the sixteenth century. Please contact us to see what's currently in stock. |
